Thickness selection of PVB film interlayer

PVB film is used as a laminating film for laminated glass, which provides strong adhesion to prevent glass debris from flying when the glass is broken.

 Architectural grade PVB film regular thicknesses are 0.38mm, 0.76mm, 1.14mm, 1.52mm, and sometimes 0.6mm is also used.

The thickness of the PVB film determines the adhesion and impact resistance, as well as the acoustic and thermal insulation properties.

Tempered glass requires a thicker PVB film to fill the unevenness of the surface because of the small deformation that occurs during the tempering process. So we will introduce the selection of PVB film thickness by ordinary float glass and tempered glass.

Ordinary float glass laminating

0.38mm PVB film can be used for ordinary glass thickness≤6mm, or 8mm thickness with short-side ≤800mm.

Tempered glass laminating

0.38mm PVB film is not recommended for laminated tempered glass, especially for roofs and canopies.

Ordinary float glass laminating

0.76mm PVB film can be used for ordinary glass with thickness of 8mm and short-side >800mm, or thickness of 10mm.

Tempered glass laminating

0.76mm PVB film can be used for tempered glass thickness≤6mm and short-side≤800mm.

Ordinary float glass laminating

1.14mm PVB film can be used for ordinary glass thickness of 12mm.

Tempered glass laminating

1.14mm PVB film can be used for tempered glass thickness≤6mm with short-side>800mm and≤1500mm, or thickness between 8 and 12mm, with short-side≤800mm

Ordinary float glass laminating

1.52mm PVB film can be used for ordinary glass thickness of 15mm and 19mm.

Tempered glass laminating

1.52mm PVB film can be used for tempered glass thickness≤6mm with short-side>1500mm, thickness between 8 and 12mm with short side width>800mm, or thickness≥15mm with short-side≤800mm

For shaped glass, as the edge of the shaped glass will cause a larger deformation, PVB thickness shall be increased by 0.38mm on the basis of the corresponding provisions.

The front windshield laminated glass of automotive is usually produced with thickness of 0.76mm automotive grade PVB film.
